Summer Learning Journey | Rise Up

For this Summer Learning Journey activity (day four, activity one), I created and wrote my own chorus for a song.

A chorus is the part of a song where the lyrics repeat. For example, in the song 'Rise Up' (which is the song we used as an example for this activity), the chorus is 'And we will rise (strong minds, strong heart), and we will rise (we all play a part), and we will rise, we'll never stop.

I created and wrote a chorus which is about how 2021 is nearly here. I talked about saying goodbye to all the crazy events that happened this year.

In the chorus, I tried to carry on rhythm and rhyme. I repeated the first and last line because I thought it would go well with the rest of the chorus.

I really enjoyed completing this activity and making my own chorus. Next I time I could challenge myself recording myself saying my chorus instead of showing it.

I found this task tricky because lots of people were taking materials that my group wanted to use.

Presentation | Emergency Shelter

Today my group presented our presentation of our emergency shelter. An emergency shelter is a place that keeps people safe from natural disasters.

First, we made our presentation and our script. And then started memorizing our lines for when we present.

Next, a group chose us to present. We started our presentation off by greeting them and then started giving information about our 3D model.

Lastly, when all the groups finished presenting our teachers gave all the groups feedback and chose one group to work with.

Our feedback was that our greeting was good but as we went on with the presentation we started to hesitate. Also it was to explain more about the 3D model to see if the information we gave was right.

At the end unfortunaley we got fired. This taught me to be fully prepeared. One thing I could change is having more confidance during my prsentation which includes having a loud and clear voice so everyone can hear me. I still enjoyed this session because I was able to present the information my group and I have learnt.

Multiplication & Division

This week I took the speed demon. I decided to do both multiplication and division because I wanted to challenge myself and try to get a faster time.

Once I was finished answering the equations my time at was 6 minutes and 33 seconds. My time was faster than last week but I know I can get a faster time. I was so close because I was three seconds longer than my fastest time.

I found answering the question easy because I know my time tables which makes easier to answer them but I just need to concertrate more on the questions.

If you don't believe me my proof is on my DLO which is at the bottom of this blog post.

Recallation Test

A math quiz tests you knowledge on how fast you answer and the strategies that is used. There are two math quizes and one challenge.

One of the quizzes uses fact families and addition/subtraction. The second quizz uses strand question (geometry, time and more). The challenge is a statistics challenge.

The first quiz tests the person on their basic facts. The person would be given a 20 questions that are realted to fact familes and addition/subtraction. That person needs to select the best answer for the question or what they think the answer is. The person needs to select an answer for all 20 questions.

The second quiz uses strand questions which is everything but basic facts. This quiz has 15 different strand questions. That person needs to select the best answer for the question or what they think the answer is. The person needs to select an answer for all 20 questions.

For the physical task a person needs to follow instructions and use materials to help complete the challenge the best they can. The person needs to find the accurate answer by the end of this task.

Making quizzes and challenges can help people learn about how much they know and how they can improve. It's also important to know different math types becaus it can help them learn more information to help make it eaier to answer hard math equations.

Testing Knowledge

A math quiz tests you knowledge on how fast you answer and the strategies that is used. There are two math quizes and one challenge. The first quiz is fact families and addition and subtraction. The second quiz is strand. This quiz uses meaurments, geometry and more. The third challenge is to test the persons knowledge on statistics.

Fact families is using all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). This challenges a person to find out a certain number. Basic facts challenges the persons ability to use simple math strategies and their ability to answer the question.

Strand question tests the persons possibilities to answer exstra questions. Strand is every other math topic (geometry, statistics, and more) apart from basic facts and fact families.

Making quizzes and challenges can help people learn about how much they know and how they can improve. It's also important to know different math types becaus it can help them learn more information to help make it eaier to answer hard math equations.

Comprehension Strategies

Comprehension skills are reading strategies that helps the reader understand the text. Some reading strategies are: prior knowledge, predicting, self-monitoring, summarising, and inferring.

Before reading prior knowledge, predicting and inferring can be used. Prior knowledge is using your knowlege of the text to help predicting what's going to happen in the text.

During reading inferring, visualising, and predicting can be used. Inferring can be used to help deduce information. Visualising can be used to picture what is happening in the text. Predicting is used to guess what happens next using the clues in the text.

After reading summarising, questioning, and synthesising. These strategies can be used to help readers expand their knowledge of the book or share their knowledge of the text.

Understanding comprehension strategies is important for the reader because it can help expand their prior knowledge and get better at using their reading strategies.

Maori North Places Names

Today I translated different Maori places in the North island. This is the same as last week but the places are int he north island not just in Auckland.

First, I matched the names I know with the Maori names. This was good strategy to use because it helped make it easier to match the names by eleminating some of them.

Next, I searched up the meaning of the names. I was able to match most of the names because some didn't translate some of the names right.

Lastly, I re-checked my work to make sure I have the right matches. I had to rearrange some of my matches and matched the ones I didn't know.

Here is a list of different Maori names matched with the English name.

I really enjoyed session because I was able to learn new Maori names and their meanings. I also found this tricky because I matched some of the names with wrong place.

Filming

Today we started filming our narratives. We used our screenplay, narrative, and storyboard to help our actors learn their lines and parts.

First, the actors practised their lines. They practised it over and ove again until they knew off by heart. We used the narritive, screenplay, and the storyboard to help us learn our lines and find out the settings.

Next, we started shooting our four scenes. We still needed to practise before filming ourselves. This took a while but we were to finish the film. The scenes were filmed in a variety of locations.

I enjoyed filming because I was able to learn how to use the microphone gimbal. I also found our film a lot of fun because some of the scenes were funny.

Emergency Shelter | Design & Technology

We designed an emergency shelter. An emergency shelter is a place that keeps people safe from natural disasters.

First, we drew up our 3D net. A 3D net is something that can be folded into a 3D shape. Our shape was a cube. We needed to draw six 15 cm squares.

Next, we transferred the 3D net into card by measuring the length and width. Once we finished we started cutting it out and folding it into a cube.

Lastly, we started to build our model which was supposed to look like the card. We used cardboard to build the model because it’s strong enough to hold the shelter up.

Touch Rugby | Session 6

This week was our last session of touch rugby. Our coach (Mark) made us practised a skill we used in our game.

The skill we practised was passing. We lined up behind four cones. Two people would go on the other side. From one end the person in front would have to pass the ball down the line. We needed to remember to keep our hands up and to pass it backwards or it would a forward pass.

After we practised we played a game of touch but we had to get into three groups. Two groups would play touch and one group would sit in the shelter and watch them play. All of the groups got a turn to play. The two and three man settle were used during the games and the skill we learnt today.

I was able to drive up the field using the three and two man settle with Chisa and Fotu. I need to practise passing the ball higher so it would be easier for the person to catch.

Commanding Conversation

Commanding conversation is a fun can do. Commanding conversation is writing a little conversation for the image that was showen on the slide.

My favourtie part of doing this task was writting a short conversation because it helps me learn different puntuation and how to use it.

Novel Study | The Twits

The Twits is a fiction book written by Roald Dahl. In chapters 27-29 the book tells about what happend to the Twits when revenge plot is done.

When the Twit's ran into the house they were shocked because everything was upside down. They thought they are going to die because they thought all their blood will go into their brain. They decided to do a head stand but then they realized they were stuck to the ground because of the glue the Raven's dropped on their heads.

When the animals saw the Twit's they escaped from their house then built a tiny one in a tree. The tree they lived was well hidden so no one can see them. The roly poly bird decided to take themback to Africa because monkeys don't like cold weather and it was nearly winter. The Twits were never seen again because they caught the Shrinks and the only thing left was their clothes inside their house.

This is a funny and interesting book that lots of children can read.

Touch Rugby | Session 5

This week was our fith session of touch rugby. Our coach (Mark) recaped some skills we used in our game.

The skill we recaped was the three man settle. To do a threeman settle one person would run up to take the touch and then plant the ball. Dummy half would pick up the ball and then pass it to the third person. We did this skill in the a group of three.

After we practised we played a game of touch but we had to get into three groups. Two groups would play touch and one group would sit in the shelter and watch them play. All of the groups got a turn to play. The two and three man settle were used during the games.

I was able to drive up the feild using the three and two man settle with Spelman and Elaario. I need to practise getting back on side before running up.

Kapa Haka Performance

Today we watched a kapa haka group perform for the school.

The first thing that happened was that they did an entrance ceremony and then started to perform. When they entered they used a conch to let the people know they are coming. Then they would introduce weapons and tools during a song and dance.

The last thing my class did was play a Maori game called Maui and Matua with Matua Ngarimu. We used the rakau's and we would have to move to the left if they said Maui but if they say Matau we would move right.

We thanked the kapa haka group by the boys from our kapa haka group performing the haka.

I enjoyed watching this kapa haka performance. My favourite part was when they showed different moves for the poi.

Shelter Materials

There are different types of shelters that have different materials that can stand against natural disasters. Materials that could go through storms are materials like concrete, wool and steel frames.

Concrete can be used for the outside layer because water can’t go through the concrete which is good.

Wool can be used for the middle layer because wool can keep the coldness of wind out of the shelter which makes the shelter warm.

Steel frames can be good to hold up the shelter because steel frames are strong to hold up something and if there’s nothing under the roof it might fall down.

By measuring the length and the amount of the materials can help make the right shape and size for the emergency shelter.

Knowing which materials are good for the right disaster is important because an emergency shelter with the right materials can save people's lives.

Fractions, Percents & Decimals

Fractions is one whole object cut into equal pieces. Percentages is the number that is expressed as a fraction of 100. Decimals is the numaral system is the standard system for for identifying numbers.

Fractions have two parts. They are the numerator and denomenator. The numerator is the amount kept. The denominator is one whole divided. There are two types of fractions which are equvalant and improper fractions. Equvalant fractions are: ½, 2/4, 4/8, 8/16. Improper fractions are 5/4→1 ¼ which are mixed up fractions.

Percentages often identifyed by the percent sign, "%". Division is used when trying to find out a percentage. One question that uses division, fractions, and decimals is ¼ 149. Here is how to solve it:  ¼ of 149 is 37.25% 149÷4=?  9÷4=2)-1, 40÷4=10, (100÷4=25, 37.251

Decimals mostly indentify integer and non-integer numbers. Also percentages can transfer into decimals. Example: 100÷4=25% 0.25, 100÷5=20% 0.2, 100÷3=33.333%  0.3.

Knowing how to use fractions, percentages, and decimals can help make it easier to figure out hard questions.

Comment Thread

This week for I commented on Fotu's Maori blog post. He was learning new words.

The first question I asked was, "What did you find hard about this task and why?"

During this task I learnt how to ask an open question that will make the person think more about it.

Model Materials

This week we have been learning about different materials for models that can go against natural disasters.

First, we had to brainstorm and think of what materials can help us when natural disasters are happening.

Next, we had to choose our materials that we needed to build our shelters. Our group chose: Reinforced concrete, wood, vinyl, and stone.

Afterwards, we needed to find the height and the width for the walls and the roof. The walls were 21.1cm for the height and 14.5cm for the width. For the roof the width was 20.1cm and the height was also 20.1 cm.

Lastly, we wrote our materials we need, how much do we need, and the height and width.

I really enjoyed finding different materials that can go up against different natural disasters.

Touch Rugby | Session 4

This week was our fourth session of touch rugby. Our coach (Mark) recaped some skills we used in our game.

The skill we recaped was thw two and three man settle. To do a two man settle one person would run up to take the touch and then plant the ball. Dummy half would pick up the ball and then pass it back to the first peraon. We did this skill in a group of 3.

Next, we started practising three man settles. To do a threeman settle one person would run up to take the touch and then plant the ball. Dummy half would pick up the ball and then pass it to the third person. We did this skill in the same group of three.

Lastly we played a game of touch but we had to get into three groups. Two groups would play touch and one group would sit in the shelter and watch them play. All of the groups got a turn to play. The two and three man settle were used during the games.

I enjoyed this session. I also found the three man settle kind of confusing.

Storyboarding | Narrative

A storyboard is a series of images displayed in sequence that shows the characters movments, the camera angles, and the story settings.

The images should show enough detail so the reader can know where the setting is without someone telling them. People film it on different angles and show the emotions on the characters face to make it more interesting.

A storyboards are different scenes in the narrative. People add a little sentence to give it more detail if the picture dosen't have enought detail. A person who draws a storyboard knows if he did a good job when someone can tell where the setting is without someone telling them.

There are no words in the image because the main ideas is to show the setting, the angles of the camera, and the characters.

Knowing how to write a storyboard is important part because it can help the actors understand how it flows. Storyboards help people visualise the people's surroundings and enviroment.

Kupu

This week for our Māori session we learnt different volcanoes and weathers in Māori.

The first thing I did was match the Māori names with english names. Most of the names are of mountains that used to be volcanoes. I used Maori dictionary to help me. Examples: Mt St John/Te Kopuke, Motutapu/Te Motu-tapu-o-Tinirau, Mt Richmond/ Otahuhu.

Lastly I matched the Maori wethers with the pictures. I also used Māori dictionary to help me match them together. Example: Rainy/He ua, cloudy, He kapua, hail, He us whatu.

Here is a list of different Maori names matched with the english name.
