Basic Facts Boxes

This week I took the speed demon. I decided to do division because I wanted to challenge myself.

Once I was finished answering the equations my time at was 3 minutes and 43 seconds. I think I have a fast time but next time I'll try and get a faster time.

I found answering the question easy because I know my time tables which makes easier.

If you don't believe me my proof is on my DLO which is at the bottom of this blog post.

Gruffalo Art Work | Art Collaboration

For art, we re-created the gruffalo cover as a class. We learnt new skills during these past few weeks colouring in the art work.

First, we were given out different pieces of paper that would make the gruffalo cover. The first technique that was demostrated to us was the blendng technique. The blending technique is to sumge different colours to make texture or to get a shade. We used pastels to colour in and cotten tips to help spread the pastels around and to blend.

Next, we started outlining the parts with black. The second technique we learnt was how to colour in the tree trunks. To do this we coloured all the tree trunks in brown. Then we started shading some parts of the tree trunks and then started blending it with the brown.

Lastly, we learnt how to colour in the leaves. To do this I coloured all the leaves in green. Then I added white and then started blending it until it made the colour I wanted.

I found this activity challenging because it's really hard to try and colour inside the lines.

Governing Topics

Governing topics are the polices that parties wish to provided to people and country. The most important topic to me is 'Te Ao Māori' and 'enviroment'.

The Te Ao Māori is about honouring the Treaty of Waitangi and protect the Māori culture.

Enviroment is about how the zero carbon act has failed to clean up our country and how farmers are mainly at fault.

If I voted and choose the governing topics I wound pick Te Ao Māori and enviroment. I would choose Te Ao Māori because I want to respect my language and I would also pick enviroment because me and my family is really passionate about trying to keep our enviroment clean.

Saftey Plan

This week we checked out the hazards, risk, and consequences that could happen during making a fire and smores.

First, we discussed different hazards and risk. Next we wrote it down. A hazard for the fire is the fire itself and the consequences is getting burnt.

Then, we discussed some consequences that could happen. Consequences can be how can we prevent it, who's responsibillity is it, and the emergency plan.

After, we made another saftey plan for making the smores with the fire. We repeated the same process but wrote down different hazards, risk and consequences. Then we made smores.

Mr Ogilvie lit up the fire and then demostrated how to roast the marshmellows. After he demostrated we made our own smores.

I found this activity really fun because we got to make smores but I also found it hard trying to roast the marshmellows without it getting burnt.

Recount

I learnt how to write a recount using the right structure and language.

First, I chose a day of a week to write a recount about. I chose Friday because it was the last day of the week. Next I wrote down key words/phrases such as: breakfast, brush teeth and shower.

Then, I put the key words/phrases in a proper sentence using past tensed (words like: walked, jumped tipped), first person (words like: I, we, me, myself, us), and the structure TREE (Title, Reveal, Envents and Ending).

After, I proof read my recount and made sure that the title, reveal, events, and ending made sence. For the events there should be four paragraphs that tells what happens before school, at school, after school, and after dinner.

I enjoyed this activity because I have learnt the proper language that is used in a recount which would help me the next time I write one.

Time | Rounding

Rounding is a math strategy that uses addition and division strategies.Rounding means to circle it to the nearest ten, hundred, thousands, and more.
Addition and division are both operations the are used for rounding. To round, the person needs to find the mean, to find the mean get a set of numbers like 5,7,1,9,3 and then add them altogether which would make 25. Then divide them by the amount of numbers there are which makes 5.
Here comes the rounding part comes in so if the numbers are 5-9 they are called high five and the numbers that are 0-4 they are called four floor. Look for the last digit. Example: 21.85 now becomes 21.9 because 5 is above.
Rounding can help people get better at adding and dividing. Also at understanding how to round numbers in to 1 decimal place.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is a time in September when people support the Te Reo Māori language to try and get more Māori speakers.

In 2018 the Māori language week theme was 'Kia kaha Te Reo Māori' and it is the theme for this year. This translates to 'Let's keep the Māori language strong'.

Risk assessment

This activity is about the possibilities of a hazard, risk, consequences and likelihood during an event.

First we recapped on what a hazard and a risk is. A hazards is things that can cause harm to people, properties, and the enviroument. A risk is somethign that will cause harm to people, properties, and the enviroment.

Next we made a saftey plan for a simple activity. We wrote down what activity it is, the class level, number of students, and where the location is.

Then we had to answer questions like what could go wrong, what could cause it to go wrong, how could we prevent it, and whose resposibilty is it.

Lastly we thought of emergency plan which is going to be needed if a risk elevates to a more serious situation.

I found this activity challenging because we had to find multiple answers for the qusestions and different plans for different risk.

Rewriting|Gruffalo

Rewriting a narritive is getting an idea from the story and changes the story that will flow with the original story.

There are three guiding questions that help changes the story and they are: where do they live?, what's the gruffalo's favourite food and where would they meet the mouse.

The owl was changed into a eagle because they are both types of birds. The eagle lives in a clifftop house because most eagles live on a cliff. The gruffalo's favourite food is eagle whipped cream because it cream rhymes with stream.

Rewriting a story can help think of creative idea to flow with a story.

Making connections

Connections allow people to conect with themselves, other text, and the world. There are 3 differents kinds of connections and they are: text to self, text to text, and text to world.

Text to self is comparing something in the text to yourself. To make a text to self connection the reading needs to get an idea from the text and compare it to themself. Example: Mouse lied to the other animals. I have lied.

Text to text is comparing something in the text to another text. To make a text to text connection the reading needs to get an idea from the text and compare it to another text. Example: The mouse tricked the gruffalo. The Twits tricked each other.

Text to world is connecting the text to the world. To make a text to world connection the reader needs get an idea from the text and then compare it to the world. Example: The mouse had no house. Some people around the world are homless.

Making connections can help the reader understand a text by linking ideas to another idea.

Time | Skipping Average

Time is an ongoing sequance of events taking place.

There are three words that start with 'm' and they are: mean median and mode. Mean or know as average is found by adding the numbers and then divded that number it by how many numbers there are. Example: 2+4+6+8+10=30, 30÷5=6. The mean is 6.

Median is found by putting the numbers from least to greatest and then find the number that is in the middle. Example: 1 2 3 4 5. The median is 3. If there is an even amount find the two numbers in the middle and then add them together. Example: 1 2 3 4, 2+3=5. The median is 5.

Mode is found by orginzing the numbers from least to greatest and then finding the numbers that are the same. Example: 2 2 3 4 5. The mode number is 2.

Character Trait | Fact or Opinion

I learnt about fact and opinion. For this activty I had to use my infering and prior knowledge strategys.

First I talked about fact and opion. Facts is when something took place. Opinion is the inference is that we made by using the fact.

Next we wrote down the things the character did in the story (the facts). Then we wrote down the inferences we made about the fact.

Lastly I made a chracter trait by using the adjectives we came up with when doing the opinion.

I understand now that a fact can have more than one opinion and to get an a opinion you need to find clues and keywords. Infering helped me find clues and keywords that could help me come up with a opinion.

Setting Description

Setting description creates a picture of what the setting looks like, sounds like, smells like, and feels like.

To describe what a setting looks like, usally uses adjectives like: tall, short, big ,small. This gives the reading an idea of the settings apperance.

When describing what the setting sounds like, adjectives is also used like: noisy, quiet, loud silent. This tells the reader what it sounds like and it gives more description.

To describe what the setting smells like, people use adjectives such as: fresh, smelly, clean. This gives the reader an idea of what the setting smells like.

When describing what the setting feels like, people use adjective such as: cold, rough, wet. This tells the reader an idea of the texture.

First we rated the situations from 1 to 5 risk. As a group we discussed what level we thought fit the situation.

Next we wrote down multiple consequences on what would have happened.

After that we made our own situations that are related to that risk level.

Hazards and Risk

I learnt about hazards and risks. In a group we thought of risk and hazards for 4 categories.
School
For this category the hazards were playground, scissors, ruler and paint brush. Some of the risks are tripping over, cutting yourself, hitting yourself and getting paint on yourself.
Home
For this category the hazards were fire place, plate, trampoline, and washing machine. Some of the risks are burning yourself, dropping the plate, water coming, and spraining your ankle.
Sports
The hazards were tennis ball, cricket bat, discus, and rippa belt. Some risks are getting hit, hurting yourself, breaking something, and falling.
Community
The hazards were rocks, lightning, pothole, and a plane. Some risks are tripping over the risk, getting struck by lightning, falling into a pothole, and crashing the plane.
I found this activity fun and I learnt what hazards and risk are.

Character Description

Character descriptions create a picture of a characters apperance, experiences and personality.

The appearance include descriptions of the hair, face, body and it's clothes. The experiences includes descriptions of where it lives, their friends , family, their interested, hobbies, talent and their secrets or special achevements. The personality include: descriptions of what kind of person are they, how do they behave, what do they say and what makes them interesting or different.

For the character description should include figuritive language. Figuritive language is a word or phrase that doesn't have it's literal meaning. Most people use metaphores and similes as figuritive language.

The reason for this activity is to learn to write a character which not only describes their apperance or personality but to describe all parts of the character.

Visualising | The Gruffalo | Nogard

Visualising is a strategy that helps a person create a picture in their head of what they're reading.

The gruffalo uses this reading strategy. The little mosue describes a creature known as the gruffalo. By the end of the story people should have a picture in their head of what the gruffalo looks like.

The nogard activity also uses visualising. The nogard activity has a description of what a nogard is. At the end people should have an idea of what a nogard is. A nogard is a dragon backwards.

Visualising is a easy way to help understand diffucult text and helps focus the person's mind on what they want.
