Olympic Math Challenge #4

LI: To use the most efficient startegy

This week we have been using the Olympic games to help us with our math. The fourth challenge was about the countries medal tallys. Since 1896 countries participating in the summer Olympic games have been creating their own all-time medal tally. Use the data from both charts to work out the top 10 medal winning countries. Create a graph to display this data. Include a comparison to NZ’s medal tally. Be creative with the data you choose to show. The more information you include, the easier it will be to analyse and draw conclusions. Hint you will need to add the totals from both charts together.

In the second blogpost it says 'Create a graph to display the data' which means to sum the top 10 totals. When I added the top 10 totals  I ranked it from 1-10, So the top 10 countries are:

  1. United States of America - 2673

  2. USSR/Russian Federation - 1271

  3. Germany - 788

  4. Italy - 771

  5. Great Britain - 770

  6. France - 683

  7. Republic of Germany - 625

  8. Sweden - 561

  9. China - 487

  10. Norway - 457

I found this activity interesting because it help me expand my knowledge of addition.

Mindfulness Reflection #1

What did you notice about your breathing? How did you feel at the end of the session?

This week Panmure Bridge School is learning about Pause , Breathe and smile. We first started off by understanding the red zone and the green zone. The red zone is the Angry, Worried, Frustrated, Overly Excited and many more emotions. Green zone is when you are feeling calm, balanced, and other peaceful emotions. We did this session to learn how to stay calm and control our emotions. We did mindfulness breathing, we closed our eyes and Mrs Anderson rang the singing bowl. We treat the singing bell like it's a taonga.

How did you feel at the end of the session?

How I felt at the end of the session is really calm, relaxed and focused on what's happening right now instead of worrying about what's happening last night, yesterday, and tomorrow. It helped me focus on myself and control my emotions that's going through my head (Mindset).

I enjoyed this activity because it showed me how to keep calm in stressed situations.

Olympic Provocation

LI: To compare there and now with the Olympic places

The DLO showing above is about the amount of money that was spent to build and help with the olympics. My reading group wrote some no and yes ideas as example yes they should spent this money to make their families proud, also with no because people could use the money with vaccines. We also found a photo of then and now happening every four years.

Scinence | Topic 8

Today for tech we have been learning about what products are acids and what are bases.

First we learnt about the differences between acid and bases. Using this information we created a table and experimented on 11 different types of chemicals, which are toilet cleaner, distilled water, apple juice, detergent, milk, window cleaner, orange juice, lemon juice, baking soda, tea, and vinegar. To find out if the product was acid or base we used pH stripes.

These items were put into a well plate. To help us find out which product is an acid or base we used blue and red litmus paper. The red litmus paper will turn blue if it’s base but if it is acid it will stay the same colour, the blue litmus paper will do the opposite. We used a pH chart to find out the colour level.

I enjoyed learning about different products that produce acids or bases.

Olympic Math Challenge #3

LI: To find the most effcient strategy

This week we have been using the Olympic games to help us with our math. The third challenge was about a badmington racket. An Olympic Badminton Racket has approximately 25 strings in total. When these strings intersect they form squares. This means that there is approximately 250 squares on the racket. Take what you know about right angles to figure out how many right angles there are on an entire badminton racket.

To answer this question I used my multiplication knowledge and the main information. I needed to find out how many right angles there are on the entire badminton racket. Since there are 250 square and 1 square has four right angles, so that means the equation is 250x4=? To get my answer I started off with 4x0=0, next I did 4x5=20. After that, I did 4x2=8 and lastly I added the two from the 20 to make it 10. In total it adds up to 1000.

I found this activity interesting because it helped me expand my knowledge of angles.

Olympic Math Challenge #2

LI: To find the most effcient strategy

This week we have been using the Olympic games to help us with our math. The second challenge was about Nastia Liukin. She competed in a gymnastics competion, which is judged with a point system. Nastia Liukin, an uneven bar champion scored a dissapointing 16.725, which put her in second place. Her opponent beat her by 0.001 of a point. The Bronze medal winner's score was a 14.975. I needed to figure out the gold medal winners score and how much Nastia scored over the bronze medalist.

For the first question I used my addition knowledge to help me find the answer. I found out that the equation for this question is 16.725+0.001=? In total the gold medal winners score is 16.726. For the second question I used me subtraction knowledge to help me find the answer. I found out the that the equation for this question is 16.725-14.975=? In total Nastia scored 01.750 over the bronze medalist.

I found this activity interesting because it helped me expand my knowledge of decimals.

Thinking Grid

LI: To learn how and why we need to stay safe in and around water

Today we have done an activity about water safety. We are doing this water safety at PBS because we are surrounded by water and if we’re in a situation where we need to stay a float or swim we can use it. In this activity we needed to respond to six questions that showed our knowledge of water safety. Then we wrote a collaborative paragraph using our responses on our thinking grid.

I enjoyed this activity because it helped me show my knowledge of water safety.

Olympic Math Challenge #1

LI: To use the most efficient strategy to solve math questions

This week we have been using the Olympic games to help us with our math. The first challenge was about Michael Phelps. We needed to figure out the average of every swim stroke it takes him to get 2 meters down the pool. Michael Phelps competed in 8 different events in the 2008 olympic games. That meant we needed to find out how many meters he swam for his gold medal. After adding up the numbers the total was 1500 meters. I then needed to divide that number by two because he swam 2 meters. The answer was 750, which means it Michael Phelps 750 strokes to get into the 1500m range.

I found this activity interesting because it helped me practise my long division skill.

Super Fingers Competition

LI: To recall our time tables faster

Today for maths we have recalled our multiplication knowledge by playing a game called Super Fingers. This is a game to see how well and how fast you can answer questions, by using dice.

The instructions of this game is that we need to write a phrase on a white board or piece of paper. Then you will need to roll 2 dice which we will multiply by, and the first person to call out the answer will take one of the letters out. The first person to have all of the letters rubbed out will win the game.

The process we did it in was similar to a netball game, draw, quarter finals, semi finals, and lastly finals. To run this competition smoothly we created a bracket which showed who will versus who. Our bracket was now even so later in the game we did a wild card who were Vayan and Micah.

In pairs we challenged each other to see who was faster at answering the questions. The winner would go against the winner from another person. Whoever wins goes up against another winner, and it will keep going until there are two people left, which would be the finals.

The two people facing each other in the finals were Afatia and Chris.

I enjoyed doing this activity because it helped me recall my multiplication facts, and answer them faster.

Osmosis and transpiration

Today for science we have been learning about osmosis and transpiration. During this task we used a celery to see the tiny tubes inside which will absorb the water to the leaves.

We first learnt about photosynthesis which is the method on how a plant grows and how they become food. The leaves are the part of a plant where photosynthesis happens. Tiny Cells and special cells help to distribute food in different parts of a plant. This method is called phalon and xylem.

Next we did the experiment which was using a conical flask, water, food colouring, water, bag, and a twist tie. Using these ingredients can help us observe the movement of the water from the roots to the leaves through xylem.

Lastly, we cut open the stems of the celery to see the coloured water going through the stalk. This shows how much water has been absorbed.

I found this session interesting because I learnt the procedure on how a plant absorbes water which goes through the cells.

Translating Aotearoa Places

Today I've been learning how to translate Maori places into English.

First, I needed to use Maori dictionary to help translate the Maori places. We only leave the ones which names are in Maori.

Next, I needed to search up to see if the place is in the north island (Ika) or the south island (Waka).

Lastly, I needed to mark the places on a map of New Zealand. The places will be marked in Maori.

I found this session interesting because I learnt places in New Zealand in Maori and where they are in New Zealand.

Bubble science

Today for tech we have been learning about the science behind bubbles.

The first task was writing about our learning goals and outcome. Then we made notes about the structure of a bubble.

Next we watched a video about how bubbles are made and some information about the name of the wand which is the stick to blow the bubbles.

The second task we watched another video on how to make three different types of bubbles.

Then, we made our bubble solution using the method to help guide us. These were made in pairs. The ingredients we used were sugar, water, glycerol.

Lastly, we used pipe cleaners as a bubble wand and straws to help make the bubbles.

I found this session interesting because I learnt the strcute of a bubble and how to make bubble solution.
