Ripper Rugby

LI:To learn the basics of ripper rugby

Yesterday was our first session for ripper rugby. We are doing this kiwi sport for four weeks across the road at dunn curk park.We were learning how to throw and catch a rugby ball. We were also looking at learning how to rip. Our group coach's were Justice and Andrew.

Ripper rugby is a type of sport when you have to colour tags on your waists and the other team has to try and rip our rippers before we score a try. If you get ripped you have to pass the ball to someone in your team. If you get ripped five times it a hand over which means you have to pass it to the other team.

First we did a warm up. The warm up activity was our coach's showed us four directions which were North, South, East and West. When one our coach's said a direction we had five seconds to get to that side. For an example, "West!" We had to run to the west as fast as we can. Whoever dosen't make it to the side in five seconds their out.

Our next warm up activity was rats and rabbits. Rats and rabbits is a fun game were you pick a partner and you have to face each other. One side will be rats and the other side will be rabbits. Our coach's will either say rats or rabbits. If our coach say rats the rabbits have to try and rip our tag before we pass the white line but if our coach says rabbits the rats have to rip the rabbits tag before they pass the cones.

After that we started practising our throwing and catching. We lined up in four lines and then the first person in each line has to stand behind the cone on the opposite side. Then the second person in each line have to run forward and pass the ball to person next to. When we were throwing we had make sure we pass backwards and when we are catching the key is to make a W with your had. Once we got to the end the person in front of them has to pass it to them and then that person has to go to the back of the line.

The final thing we did was play a couple of rounds of ripper rugby. We had to use all the skills we learnt today while playing our game. It was red vs green. I got eight rips and I scored one try. At the end it was a tie. I thought that our first session was fun and I learnt how to rip.
