Fact Find (Mars)

Today I did this really fun activity called fact find. Fact find is about researching a new or interesting topic like enviorment and machine.

I decided to research a planet in our solar system which was 'Mars'. I chose this planet because I wanted to learn new facts about Mars.
The information I need to present is as follows:

1. Introduction

2. 5 facts

3. Media/Images and video

4. Information Sources

My favourite part of doing this activity was the 5 facts. I enjoyed doing the 5 facts because that was the part when I learnt some new facts. I enjoyed doing this fact find because I got learn about the second smallest planet in our Solar System.

Excellence Bronze

Three weeks ago I was sorted in to a new badge bidding group. I was bidding for excellence and innovation bronze. I thought I deserved this bagdge because I was able to finish my four priorites (maths, reading, writing and inquiry) before Friday. That meant I can finish my other work so I can get 100% on the must do task list.

Confidence Gold

Last for badge biding I earnt my confidence gold bage. I have earnt all my confidence bages which are bronze, silver and gold. I got this bage because I was Confident enough to take responsibility for my sister when taking her back home by myself. This will give more time for my mum to finish work at home insted of coming to get us and she might be able to spend time with us by the time we get home.

Prodigy

Today I decided to do prodige for my can do. Prodigy is a fun math games that has wizards, monsters and spells. This kind of like Harry Potter. I'm on level 56.

You need to get the questions or equations right if you want to win againts the monster you're fighting. The question I got was 'how many angles are?' I had to count how many less, equal and greater angles. I got answer right.

I found this can do fun and I learnt what are lees, equeal and greater angles.

Ice Age when the world chills out

This week I chose a book called "Ice ages when the world chills out." This is a non fiction book which means everything in the book is true. This book is based on different type of ice ages.

We had to answer all the question in a full sentence unless were listing. I had to write down 3 facts, one are my facts were "Ice ages have ended around 12,000 years ago." Then we had to list three or more new words we learnt from the book.

I found this activity fun because I got to learn about ice ages in the past and now.

Basic Facts Boxes

This week I took the speed demon. I decided to do multiplication because I wanted to challenge myself.

Once I was finished answering the equations my time at was 5 minutes and 13 seconds. I think my time was okay but next time I will try and get a better time.

I enjoyed this activity because I am trying to challenge myself each week.

Volleyball | Dig

This week for volleyball we are learning a new volleyball technique called dig. Dig in volleyball is to prevent the ball from hitting the floor after being spiked by the opposing team.

How to do a dig:
First you will need to put your right leg in front and your left leg behind and bend them. This will help you keep balence when hitting the ball.

Next you put both arms in front of you and keep them straight. Also make sure that both hands are clenched.

Then be prepared to recieve the ball.

When the ball comes you will need to exstend. You will need to hit the ball with your forearms. The arms should be aligned with your sholders.

Response

This week we replied to room 4's comment with an open question because we wanted to start a conversation. Open questions can be answered with one full sentence or more.

In a group of four we had to create a Google Doc which would have the comment that we are going to reply back to room 4. Our comment had to answer room 4's questions.

Next we made a chart that has a list of open and closed questions. After writing down the questions we chose one that we can use in our comment.

We crerated a reply to room 4's question. We put together our greeting, positive feedback, the answer to the question and our open question.

I enjoyed learning how to reply back to a comment.

Emotions, Numbers and weather

This week we were learning how to translate emotions and the weather in to Māori.

Before we started that I started I had to do the daily routine. The date was Wendseday 24 June / Rāapa rua te kau ma wha o Pipiri. Then we had to write what was the date yeasterday which was Tuseday 23 June / Rātu rua te kau ma toru o Pipiri.

Next I translated ten numbers in to M
āori. The numbers I had to translate were between fifteen / te kau ma rima and fourteen billion / Te kau ma wha piriona. Example: two hundred and eighteen / rua rau, te kau ma waru.

Then I needed to translate six different emotions. I did this part of this task on a google slide. Example: He/she is hungry / Kei te hiakai.

Lastly I translated eight different types of weather and then added a photo to show that shows that weather. Example: The sun is shinning / Kua whitite ra (then add a photo).

I learnt this as a child

Angles, Coding and Measuring

I learnt about three new math startergies which are angles, coding and measuring. Angles are formed when two lines meet at a shared point. Coding is translating a procedure in to another language for the computer to understand. Measuring something puts the amount of the thing into numbers.

In a pair we had to play this game called 'Go Home'. We used protractors, ten sided dice, ruler and pencil to help us get to the house that we needed to go to.

One person will have to roll the dice and whatever number it lands on we had to go to the house that has that number. I used the ruler to see how far we go, the protractor to turn and the pencil to mark my spot.

We took three turns each. We recorded our steps on a google spreed sheet. We used coding in our steps for the computer to understand.

During this lesson I learnt the definion of angles, coding and measuring. Also my partner and I made some mistakes with the directions but we shorted it out.

Verb Tenses

A verb is a word that describes an action. Tenses are three things that tell about an action. There are 12 different verb tenses.

The three things are time, continuance and completion. Time involes past, present and future. Past tenses tells about an action that has already happened. Present tenses tells about an action that is still going on. Future tenses tells about an action that hasn't yet happened.

Continuance involes simple and continuous. Simple describe actions without specifically stating whether the actions are completed. Continuous tenses shows an action that is, was, or will be in progress at a certain time.

Completion includes perfect. Perfect is a finished action. Although something can be in the past but not finished.

The 12 different verb tenses are: Past simple, present simple, future simple, past continuous, present continuous, future continuous, past perfect, present perfect, future perfect, past perfect continuous, present perfect continuous and future perfect continuous.

Verb tenses can help kids to learn when the action took place and whether the action is in the past, present and future.

Questioning

I learnt about a reading stratergy called questioning. I applied the stratergy to the book called 'Thirst!'. I needed to orginize the questions about the book in to the four categories.

I put the question "What is the drinking company name?" in the Right There category because on page three I saw a truck that said 'Aqua-Plex' and a lady filling up a tank with fresh water.

I placed the question "What does the water tank code do?" in to the Think and Search category because on page three a saw a sentence that said the code was suppost to lock the tank.

I put the question "Why doesn’t Ryder’s family have as much water as the Carter family?" in to Author and Me because I read a sentence that said 'People still pay lots of money in the city' so that probaly ment they didn't have enougth money for water.

I placed the question "What do you think happened to Ryder?" in to the On My Own category because there aren't really any clues in the book so I thought Ryder might went back to get more water for his family.

I found doing this activity easy because I have more experience on the four types of questions from last year.

Will Smith (Fact Find)

Today I did this really fun activity called fact find. Fact find is about researching a new or interesting topic like enviorment and machine.

I decided to research a well known Amrerican actor who is Will Smith. I chose him because I've seen him in lots of movies and shows so I wanted to learn more about him.
The information I need to present is as follows:

1. Introduction

2. 5 facts

3. Media/Images and video

4. Information Sources

My favourite part of doing this activity was the 5 facts. I enjoyed doing the 5 facts because I learnt a lot of information about Will Smith. I found doing this activity a little hard because I did this activity by myself but I was able to get it done.

Volleyball | Over and Under Arm

For this weeks volleyball session we learnt how to do an over arm and under arm. This skill is used to serve in volleyball.

How to do an over arm

First put your left leg in front of the right leg so you're balanced. Next put your weak arm straight in front and put your right arm straight up so it makes an L shape. Then put the ball on your weak hand and then throw it up and hit it with your right hand.

How to do an under arm
First put arm in front of you and make sure it's straight. Next put your other arm under and also make sure it's straight. Then throw the ball up softly and then hit the ball up wards with the other hand.

Days of the week, numbers, feelings and weather

This week for our Māori were learning days of the week, numbers, feelings and the weather in Māori.

Before we started that I started I had to do the daily routine. The date was Wendseday 17 June / Rāapa te kau ma whitu o Pipiri and the date tommorow will be Thurseday 18 June / Rāpare te kau ma waru o Pipiriri.

Next I had to translate four different types of weather that were in M
āori.
Example: Kua whiti te ra/the sun is shinning.

Then I had to translate numbers that went up to a billion. I needed to translate tekau/ten numbers.
Example: Te kau ma tahi miriona/11 000 000

Lastly I need to write down the felling that is showing. I wrote the answer in Māori.
Example: Kei te wera/it is hot

I learnt this as a child

Length, Mass and Volume

This week we were learning about length, mass and volume. Length is how long something is from one end to another. Mass is the amount of something. Volume is the amount of space something takes up.

I first solved six addition and subtraction problems about length, mass and volume.

After finishing answering the equations I checked the answers by using paper, scales and measuring cups to help me.

I measured the pieces of paper using a ruler and then cutted of the exstra pieces to find my answer by re-measuring the paper. For the scales I put the equal amount of mini weights on each side and then taked away/added more on one side. Then I would take them out and count them to get my answer. Lastly with the measuring cups I filled up a tube to the right amount and then pured it in the measuring cup. Then I add/pour water from the measuring cup.

During this lesson I learnt the definision of length, mass and volume. Also I learnt how to measure length, mass and volume.

Inferring

Inferring is to deduce (to figure out something unclear) information using clues, reasoning and prior knowledge.

If wanting to infer a picture of a person first figure out what is a happening. Example: This person is going to run a relay.

Then write down two clues that helped you find out what is happening. Example: He/She is wearing running shoes. He/She is going to run relays because he/she is holding a baton.

Inferring is a really helpful reading strategy because it can help lots of people understand information from a picture.

Mouselets in danger

This week the book I decided to summarise was 'Mouselets in danger'. This is a fiction book which means it not true.

I had to list three things that happened in the story. The first thing I listed down was ' Colette almost drowned in a river.'

I enjoyed this book because there was surprising parts in the book.

Volleyball|set

When playing volleyball one of the skills during a game is set. Set in volleyball is a overhead contact of the ball.

How to do a set?
First the person will need to get in to the right position. First put the right leg in front and the left leg at the back so he/she is balanced. Then put both hands above the head and make sure that the hands are spaced out.

Next the person will have to push it over the net by bending the knees and then pushing both arms and legs into the straight position.

When the ball comes back the person has to use the same technique to hit it over. When the person throws it back over the net he/she will have to use her fingers instead of her palms.

Geometric masking art

For our art session we are going to be using the masking technique. Masking is protecting areas of the canvas to stop paint from touching the protected areas.

First I did was use the masking tape to section out the edges. That part will be the frame of this geometric art.

Next I sectioned out parts of the paper. We mixed big and little sizes together to make equal and make it fit on the page.

Then I coloured in the white spaces with different colour pastels. I made sure that it wasn't shagy and there are no white spaces.

Lastly I need to carfully take off the masking tape. I needed to make sure that I don't rip my art work.

Doing this type of art interesting for me because I found taking off the tape really satisfying.

Vocabulary

We were learning new vocabulary that are realted to light and sound. Light is a type of energy that makes it possible for people to see the world around them. Sound is created by sound waves that carry into your ear and hit your ear drum so you can hear it.

The first we had to do to help us understand  the light and sound vocabulary we had to match the word that goes together with the definion. This part was a individual task and we used websites like the dictionary.

Next we had to get back in to our groups because we had to work together to complete the next task was find, draw, animate, act. The words we chose was photon, prism, requency and vibration. I found a picture of a photon. Brooklynne made a video of her using a prism. Chisa drew what requency is. David made a animation on spectrum.

Last thing we had to do was insert our creations on a google slide. There should be at least on picture/video on each slide.

During this lesson I learnt different and interesting light and sound vocabulary.

Number chart

Today for our Māori session we are learning how to count to 100 in te reo Māori.

Before we did the chart we started off writing the date in Māori. We wrote this down on a google doc. The date today is Wednesday the 10th of June/Rāapa 10 o Pipiri.

Next I had to translate twenty different numbers in to Māori. The numbers I had to translate was between eleven and ninty nine.

Lastly I made a hundred chart in Māori on a google doc. If I wanted to write 64 in Māori first I would write ono te kau ma/sixty. Then I would add wha/four at the end to make ono te kau ma wha/64.

I learnt this as a child.

Subtraction using place value

This week I taught a group on how to solve a subtraction problem using place value.

To solve this equation '207-20' I first broke up the second number which is twenty. When breaking up the twenty it should be writen like '20+0'.

Next I added the ones from the twenty to two hundred and seven. This part was easy because two hundred and seven take away zero equals the same number (207).

Lastly I needed to subtract twenty from two hundred and seven. Two hundred and seven take away twenty equals one hundred and eighty seven which means my answer to this equation is '187'.

I found using place value helpful because the sequance of using place value was easy to understand which made it even easier for me to solve the equations using place value.

Verbs

Verbs are words that describe actions, being a certain way and thinking. There are three different types of verbs.

Physical verbs are action verbs. Action verbs describe phiscal actions that creates a motion with the body or a tool to complete a action.
For examples:
1.swim
2.flick
3.punch

Mental verbs are anything realted to the mind. This type a verb describs a action that is unable to see.
For examples:
1.think
2.dream
3.learn

State of being verb are not like other verbs. Insted this type of verb describes the way something that exist.
For examples:
1.will
2.am
3.are

Making predictions

For reading this week we are learning how to predect a text. Predicting is guessing what will happen next using the clues and using our prior knowledge to help us. I had to use the predict strategy to help me with my task.

I made three predictions about the book 'Happy new year.' I made three predictions by looking at the cover and three after reading two or three paragraphs.

One of my first prediction before reading the book was 'I think it's a recount because new year is a real event that happens every year.' That prediction was wrong because the book I read was a narritive insted.

Another prediction I made was 'I think that something will go wrong during new year.' That prediction was correct because someone lit a fire that spred around the beach.

I found this reading strategy can be helpful in the future because it can help lots of kids use their prior knowledge to help find out what is going to happen next.

Plurals

Plurals are more than one thing. The are many different rules to plurals.

Regular plurans are created when an s is added at the end of the word depending on what letter the noun ends with.
For example:
1.cat/cats
2.car/cars
3.house/houses

Memorising and looking up irregular nouns in the dictionary is the best way to follow plural noun rules for irregular nouns.
For example:
1.child/children
2.tooth/teeth
3.foot/feet

It's important to know what plurals are because it helps with discovering the amount of something.

Interactive summary

This week we are making an interactive summary of the article South Pacific Beats. We learnt four different reading strategies to help us understand this article.

The reading strategies we learnt the passed few weeks were: prior knowledge, visualising, skimming and scanning. Prior knowedge is information that you already know about a topic. Visualising is understanding a text and drawing a picture of your understanding. Skimming is reading a text quickly to understand the main idea. Scanning is looking for key words to find specific information.

Next we learnt some vocabulary that was in the article. Vocabulary is when you clarify a word that someone dosen't know or you don't know.

After that we wrote a summary. When we finished writing the summary we wrote down details. A summary is a breif statment of the main point of a topic. Details are specific information about the topic.

Properties of light

Light is a type of energy that makes it possible for people to see the world around them. Property is a characteristic of something.

When light is shining and a opaque object blockes the light it will no long be seen because a opaque object is not see through. That proves that light can be blocked by an opaque object.

Light can change direction when reflecting it using a mirror. It depends on the angle on of the mirror because when turning the mirror the direction of the light changes. The proves that light can reflect using a mirror.

These expirements showed that light can change direction and it can be blocked by something that is opaque.

Look at the doc for more information.

Reading large numbers

Reading large numbers can be difficult depending on what number is being read.

To read 547 829 316 first read the millions. The millions is read five hundred and forty seven million.

Next read the thousands. The thousand is read eight hundred and twenty nine thousand.

The last part in the number to read is the ones. The ones is read three hundred and sixteen.

When putting the steps all together it is read ' five hundred and forty seven million, eight hundred and twenty nine thousand three hundred and sixteen.

Reading large numbers can help a lot when trying to answer an math equation and trying to explain a big number.
