Conversation

Direct speech is a type of speech. This is when two or more people are having a conversation and it's what they actually say.

When retelling a conversation in writing, speech marks are used to show if someone is speaking. This is how we know this is direct speech.

Direct speech also uses dialogue words. Some examples of the words are: shouted, explained, cried, suggested, continued.

If a type of writing uses speech marks, dialogue words, and people talking together, then it is direct speech.

Basic Facts Boxes

This week I took the speed demon. I did up to 5 because I wanted to started off easy.

Once I was finished answering the equations my time at was 4 minutes and 28 seconds. I think I got a good time but next time I will try and finish between 3-4 minutes.

I enjoyed this activity because I am getting faster at answer the equations and I my time is getting better each week

If you don't believe me my proof is on my DLO which is at the bottom of this blog post.

Human body

This week the book I decided to summarise was 'The human body'. This is a non-fiction book which means the facts in the book is true.

I had to list three facts in the book. The first thing I listed down was ' The lungs of an adults are about the same size as a football.'

I enjoyed this book because it had really interesting facts about the human body.

Place value counting|Ancient Egyptian numbers

Ancient Egyptian numbers were drawed using seven different symbols thousands of years ago. Egyptians carved symbols on to rocks.

Ones, tens and hundreds were known as ropes. For example if writing 274 in Ancient Egyptian it would be drawed as two coil of rope for 200, seven ox straps for 70 and four rods for 4.

Thousands, ten thousands and hundred thousands were pictures of a frog, finger and lotus. For example if writing 234,000 in Ancient Egyptian it would be drawed as two frogs, three fingers and four lotus.

Ancient Egyptian symbols were used a lot back in the day to communicate with others.

Properties of sound

Sound is created by sound waves that carry into your ear and hit your ear drum so you can hear it. Property is a belonging to someone or something.

When making a sound it can travel in every direction it comes from. Sound can also travel around corners.

As sound travels it gets weaker each second because as sound travels the energy spreads and the sound fades away.

Depending on where the sound comes from it can be loud if it's closer to a decibell meter but if it's further away the sound can be barely heard.

It's important to know where sound can and cannot be heard and using a sound meter to see how far sound can travel is a good way of learning about sound.

Aboriginal dot painting

For the past two weeks we have been learning about aboringinal art that people did a long time ago in Austrailia.

First we started off painting some different symbols on a blank piece of paper. All of the symbols has a different meaning to it. We had to use different colours when we drawed the symbols.

Next we watched a video on how a kangaroo got it's pouch and that video they used symbols as the pictures. When we finished watching the video we had to paint symbols that would tell the story on how the kangroo got it's pouch.

The final painting we had to do was going to be our art work which meant we had to use the symbols and the skills we learnt to this art work. We had to chose an animal to trace on a black piece of paper with a pencil and white chalk. Then we had to paint inside the animal we chose. The last part we had to do was draw symbols to tell our story.

I enjoyed doing this type of art work because I thought that the dotting technique was a good way to paint different symbols for our stories.

South Pasific Beats

South Pasific Beats is an article about a designer who creates a new log drum that's been inspired by an olden day log drum know as the lali.

The sound of the lail as been a big part of Wellington's designer Rachael Hall's life. Waching Tongan dancers moving to the beat of the lali has inspired her to make one of her own log drums in her last year of university.

After many versions her final design she called was the Patō. It is a digital drum which means it can be pluged in to a computer to record the sound and in to a speaker.

Rachael Hall thought it was a good idea to create a new log drum so the sound of the lali can brought to the digital age.

Light and Sound

This week we had to use our prior knowledge for our inquiry task on what makes light and sound.

Light reflects on dark object like black paper which makes it look brighter and sound waves carry so you can hear them.

First I had to find photos on pixabay that makes light and sound then put it on my google drawing. There had to be twenty photos so I had to do ten for each category.

Next I had to write how I know that the photos I chose make light or sound.

Scanning

This week we learnt how to scan for information about the article South Pasific Beats.

First we learnt how to scan for specific information in a book. There are four steps to find the right information that you looking for.

Next on a google doc we had to answer eight questions using the scanning tecnique to find the answers in the article.

For an example if I had to answer 'what's the designers name and culture' I would have to think of key words that will help me find the answer like designer, culture and name. Next I scaned for keywords to find the information I'm looking for. Lastly I read the information that I found.

During this lesson I learnt how to scan for specific information in a book and a article.

Number sentence order

Number sentence order is a special sequence of an equation.

The first number in the equation is the amount of objects that a person has.

The second number in the equation tells the number that is added or subtracted.

Number sentences can't be changed or the whole meaning changes.

Xtramath

Today I decided to do xtramath as another one of my can do. Xtramath is a interesting math game that you can learn addition, subtraction, multiplacation and division equations.

You start a addition then when you get really good at it you move up to subtraction and then when you're ready you go to multiplacation and after that is division.

I'm on levl 2 which is subtraction. I think I'm realy close to going to level 3 which is multiplacation. I had to race the teacher.

You need to type the right answer before he does. If you get the answer right and it's before the teacher you get a smiley face but if you get it wrong or you don't answer it in time you have to start again.

When I finished racing the teacher I had forty-eight smiley faces at the end. I'm really pround of myself but the next time I do it my goal is try to beat forty-eight. I learnt all different subtraction equations.

Prodigy

Today I decided to do prodige as my can do. Prodigy is a fun math games that has wizards, monsters and spells. I'm on level 30.

You need to get the questions or equations right if you want to win againts the monster you're fighting. The question I got was 'how many bedrooms are 6 meters long?' I had to count how many bedrooms are 6 meters long. I got answer right which was 9.

I found this can do fun and I learnt measurement of length.

Basic Facts Boxes

This week I took the speed demon. I did up to 20 because I want to challenge myself.

Once I was finished answering the equations my time at was 5 minutes and 18 seconds. I think I my goal for next week is to get a better time.

I enjoyed this activity because I am getting faster at answer the equations and I am getting better times than last week.

Prior knowledge

A lali is a type of traditional log drum from the South Pacific Islands. These drums have been used for centuries.

The lali was used to let people know when there were births or deaths over a long distance. For hundreds of years, Pacific log drums have been a big part of island life.

Today it used more in Pacific musical groups and at cultural festivals.

Even though the lali drum has been used for hundred of years now it is used more for music than communicating with others.

Comment thread

This week we are going to be commenting a little differently. At the end of our comment we have to ask a question that they can reply back. For an example "Do you like animals?" and once they reply they have to ask the question about the same topic.

I commented on Shinaye's writing blog post. The question I asked was 'Do you know any other types of curlture drums?'
I enjoyed this activity because I learnt how to write a comment ending with a question which can carry on.

Direct and Reported Speech

Direct speech is what a person exacly said and reported speech is telling someone what someone else said.

Direct speech uses speech marks to show that a person is speaking at that exact moment.

Reported speech is telling someone what a person has already said.

It is really importaint to learn the difference between a direct speech and a reported speech.

Facts to 20

Facts to twenty are any two numbers that are added together to make twenty.
For example:
10+10
9+11
8+12
7+13
6+14
5+15

Number bonds can help with facts to twenty and harder equations. Number bonds is simple addition to a tidy number like 10, 50 and 90. Making a number bonds rainbow can help understand what two numbers add to twenty.

The number bonds strategy helps to learn and get better at basic facts to twenty.
